Represent Yourself

  • Helping You Help Yourself
  • February 3, 2019
  • “Unbundling”is relatively new to Arkansas. It allows you to have pleadings prepared by a lawyer, but not pay the big price tag to hire a lawyer to represent you. It allows you to get legal advice withing paying a big retainer. It offers tremendous flexibility on how much you want a lawyer to do for you. You are the boss.
  • FACT 1: People don’t want to spend a huge amount of money for lawyers and are looking online for free legal help or “forms” to handle their legal issue themselves.
  • FACT 2: People need to know the law regarding their legal issue to evaluate their situation but don’t want to pay a lawyer a stack of money to “be their lawyer.” They just want to know the nuts & bolts of the law and what their options might be.
  • FACT 3: In Arkansas, people can pay a lawyer to prepare the legal documents necessary to their case but don’t have to “retain” that lawyer to handle their case for them.
  • FACT 4: At Canova Law & Mediation Svs., we can walk you through the process of preparing thorough and accurate legal documents that will serve you and your family much better than a $500.00 packet of “fill in the blank” paperwork with no personal assistance in getting it done right.
  • FACT 5: At Canova, we want to answer your questions, enabling you to make good decisions for you and your family. We want your legal documents to be accurate, address all the issues the Court will want to see addressed and otherwise put you in good shape when you go to Court without a lawyer.

SOME SERVICES WE OFFER:

  • PREMIUM PACKAGE
    • 30 minute phone or Skype conference with a lawyer to discuss the law in your situation and how it might apply to your case and advise you as to your various options.
    • Prepare legal documents (Complaint for Divorce, Decree of Divorce and other documents necessary for an uncontested case) based on information you provide and the options you choose after your conference with our lawyer.
    • Review the documentation provided with you through another 30 minute phone or Skype conference to make sure everything meets your needs.
    • Provide step by step guidance on how to file your case, where and when to go to present your case and what to say when you get there.
  • GET LEGAL ADVICE
    • 45 minute phone or Skype conference with a lawyer to get answers to some questions you have about your situation.
  • REVIEW LEGAL DOCUMENTS
    • If your spouse or the other party in your case has presented you with legal documents, we can review those documents with you to see if they are fair and equitable.
  • PROVIDE LEGAL REPRESENTATION FOR LIMITED PURPOSES
    • Perhaps you are being asked to attend a “settlement meeting” or a mediation and want a lawyer by your side before you sign the bottom line. We can do that.
    • Perhaps you need information (such as bank accounts, credit card statements, 401(k) statements) and want a lawyer to conduct discovery by sending the other party a series of questions you want answered and request documentation you need. We can do that.

We can be as involved, or not, in your case as you choose.  We give you the tools necessary to handle matters on your own and/or we tell you what the law says about your situation and provide you with some options and ideas of how to resolve your problems.

Testimonials
  • "Kimberly made the experience of mediation much more comfortable than I had ever anticipated. I felt complete at ease being honest and speaking freely about all my concerns. She was very hepful in walking me through one of the most stressful parts of my life and I'm very thankful to her for her services." - A mediation client from September 2015

  • "Mediation with Kimberly was smooth. " - A mediation client from September 2015

  • "I recently mediated a domestic relations case with Kimberly Canova and Adell Ralston. I have utilized mediation in several of my cases over the years; however, this was my first experience with co-mediators. I found utilizing co-mediators to be very worthwhile. It saved time, was cost effective, and made my client more at ease. Often times in mediation, as was the case in this matter, the mediator opts to caucus the parties. In doing so, many times my client and I are left waiting on the mediator for hours to come back with information from the other side. With the two mediators, we were able to keep the dialogue going and brainstorm throughout the time we were there, which I felt assisted us in coming to an agreement in a more timely manner. I also believe my client felt “heard” the entire mediation, which made her feel she got more from the experience and her money was well spent. " - M. Kemper, Attorney at Law
